Know the facts about Fragile X

One in 129 women and 1 in 350 men are carriers of fragile X syndrome, most unknowing. Fragile X affects all races and ethnicities.
Symptoms of fragile X include: mental impairment, ranging from learning disabilities to mental retardation, attention deficit and hyperactivity, anxiety and unstable moods, autistic behaviors, long face, large ears, flat feet and hyperextensible joints, especially fingers.
Seizures (epilepsy) affect about 25% of people with fragile X syndrome.
Women carriers of the premutation can experience premature ovarian failure (POF) or early menopause and reduced fertility.
Fragile X-associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS) is a newly identified neurological disorder, involving progressively severe tremors and difficulty with walking and balance. It appears to specifically affect some older premutation carriers, generally grandfathers of children with fragile X syndrome. |
